Salome Alt

Residenz

Salome Alt (1568-1633), was the mistress of Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau. She was the daughter of a merchant and met the Prince-Archbishop during a festivity in Salzburg. It is said that after having started a passionate love affair with the catholic ruler of Salzburg she was unable to return to her parent’s home. In the Residence Palace of Salzburg probably a secret door behind a cupboard was leading from the Archbishop’s state rooms to Salome’s private chambers. Wolf Dietrich and Salome had 15 children and as the Archbishop was unsuccessful in obtaining a permission to marry his mistress, he built a representative home for his family outside the city walls of Salzburg. You are cordially invited to hear more about this love story and Salome’s castle during a guided walking tour in Salzburg.
