The patron saints of Salzburg

Dom

Rupert of Salzburg: Around 696, Theodo, Duke of Bavaria decided to send the bishop of Worms, Rupert, to Salzburg. There Rupert re-established St. Peter’s Abbey at the site of a late antique church. Some years later he founded the Benedictine nunnery of Nonnberg, where his niece Erentrudis became the first abbess.

Virgil of Salzburg was an Irish churchman, and later, bishop of Salzburg. There he started important mission initiatives and built the first cathedral, which was inaugurated in the year 774. This architectural masterpiece was one of the biggest churches in Europe: 66 metres long and 33 metres wide.
